Ms. Roberts and her students put different cups to the test last week! Along with her assistant Ms. Fore and Winthrop intern Ms. Oswald , her class worked on a science project about thermal energy and heat transfer.

Ms. Oswald writes, "Students worked together to design an insulated cup, and we experimented to see which team could keep liquid hottest for the longest amount of time! They are learning about heat transfer via conduction, convection, and radiation."

This is great! We love to see the creativity. Thank you so much for sharing!

We are so lucky in LCSD to have someone as amazing as Ms. Knokhinova. She not only works with our students here at ILIS, but also students in ILMS and ILHS. Wherever she is, one thing you can guarentee is that she is making a huge impact.

We love you, Ms. Yana!

Ms. Wahl is one of our fantastic 5th Grade math teachers! She has such an engaging approach to teaching lessons to her students, and this is just one example of many showing just that. Check out what her students were up to this week!

She writes: "On Tuesday, our class worked on finding the volume of composite solid figures using a hands-on activity with present boxes that were taped together to create composite figures. Students worked together to break the figures into smaller rectangular prisms and calculate the volume. They worked hard, collaborated with their classmates, and had a lot of fun learning through this engaging activity!"

Thank you for sharing, Ms. Wahl! We love to see it, Warriors!

Good Saturday Morning! We all remember the scientific method, right? You might not even realize that you probably use these steps to answer everyday questions all the time. (For example: If I use brown sugar instead of white sugar, will my cookies be chewier?) Ms. Phillips’ 5th grade Science class got to put the scientific method into action with a hands-on experiment of their own!

She writes:
"I want to share with you how my students learned about the steps in The Scientific Method.
They had a lot of fun doing a “Penny Lab” using water, a dropper and a penny. (Step 1- Question) They wondered how many drops of water a penny could hold. (They all did the heads side facing up.)
Step 2 - Hypothesize
They made an educated guess of how many drops on their lab sheets.
Step 3 - Test - This was the fun part! They dropped water on their penny for 5 trials.
Step - 4 - Analyze/Observe-
Students talked with others to see if they had similar or different outcomes.
Step 5 - Conclusion - Then students discussed the things that could have caused the differences in their data.

This was a great hands-on science investigation to start the school year!!"

Thank you so much for sharing, Ms. Phillips! Great work, Warriors!

We hope you all had as great a week as Ms. Harwood's 5th Grade Math classes! Check out what they were up to. They discovered a formula for volume of rectangular prisms on Wednesday using unit cubes! The students can use this math for real applications such as calculating how many items you can fit in a box, how many dirt or stone blocks you need to build a castle wall in Minecraft, and yes, how to try and solve the age old question of "How many jelly beans are in this jar?"

Enjoy your weekend, Warriors!

We hope you’re having a great Thursday! Ms. Buck’s 6th Grade Science students sure are. 🥳 She writes: “Students kicked off the school year by participating in a collaborative STEM team-building challenge designed to strengthen communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Working in small groups, students used only strings attached to a cup to construct a designated design while navigating constraints such as not using their hands and, at times, completing the task without verbal communication. This activity fostered teamwork, perseverance, adaptability, and strategic thinking as students learned the importance of collaboration in achieving a common goal.” Incredible!!! Be sure to scroll through the photos to get the whole picture of the scope of this exercise. And thank you so much for sharing with us! #ilis #wearewarriors #theintermediateschool

Ms. Riesett's 6th Grade Science class is wasting no time making learning fun! And they are enjoying the outdoor classroom space! Her class participated in a water bottle flipping lab! During their research, students tested different amounts of water in their bottles to determine which amount resulted in the most successful flips. An additional discovery? No matter how they landed, the students got a big kick out of every flip! Great work, Warriors! Thank you for sharing Ms. Riesett!
